    Getting a visa photo accepted the first time

    Visa systems check photos automatically before a person ever looks at them. The upload is refused if the file is the wrong shape or too heavy, and the application can be delayed later if the photo doesn't meet the rules. Three things cause most problems.

    • The file size limit. The US DS-160 and DV lottery stop at 240 KB; the Chinese form wants 40–120 KB. The tool compresses the file to fit and shows the size after you download.
    • The background colour. White works almost everywhere except the UK, which prefers light grey or cream. The tool sets the right colour for each visa.
    • Glasses. The US doesn't allow them at all. Elsewhere, glare or thick frames can still get a photo refused, so it's simplest to take them off.

    What size is a visa photo?

    Most visas use 35 × 45 mm. US visas use 2 × 2 inches (600 × 600 px digitally), China uses 33 × 48 mm, and the UAE 43 × 55 mm.

    Can I use my passport photo for a visa?

    Often yes, if the size and background match and the photo is recent. US visas also require no glasses, and many embassies want a photo taken in the last 6 months.

    What background colour should a visa photo have?

    White for the US, India, China and the Gulf. White or light grey for Schengen countries. Light grey or cream for the UK.
